India is experiencing the ‘worst’ water crisis in its history, and a 6 per cent drop in GDP is anticipated by 2050 (Composite Water Management Index, 2018 by NITI Aayog). This alarming condition of increased uncertainty in rainfall patterns and concurrent groundwater depletion necessitates the investigation of alternative water sources. The figures indicate that India generates about 38,254 MLD of sewage and has an installed treatment capacity of 11,784 MLD. Currently, just 33 per cent of urban wastewater in India is treated, and even less is reused. According to the CPCB, sewage production will surpass 120,000 MLD by 2051. In addition, the leftover untreated sewage is often released into the neighbouring waterbodies
