Hawkar is a tech-driven platform designed to bridge the gap between street vendors, retail stores, and customers by providing a seamless digital marketplace. Street vendors have historically been a crucial part of the urban economy, supplying middle-class and low-income groups with essential goods. However, with the rise of online retail and large-scale retail chains, they face challenges in visibility, frequent evictions, and extortion threats, limiting their growth. Hawkar aims to empower street vendors and small retailers by giving them an online presence through a mobile application, enabling them to connect with customers effortlessly. The platform also partners with e-rickshaw services to facilitate doorstep or curbside deliveries, ensuring that vendors who cannot move around can still serve their customers in an eco-friendly manner. This initiative not only enhances accessibility for customers but also promotes last-mile connectivity, saving time and fuel. Beyond commerce, Hawkar serves as a support system for street vendors by helping them access government schemes, legal assistance, and business growth opportunities through events, fairs, and promotions. By strengthening their presence and increasing sales, Hawkar also promotes the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative. Starting in Lucknow, Hawkar aims to scale city-wide, state-wide, and eventually Pan-India before expanding globally to countries with similar market structures. With street vendors and retail collectively contributing up to 16% of India’s GDP, Hawkar holds huge scalability potential while providing employment opportunities to low and middle-income individuals, creating a structured and thriving local economy.
